CHICKENSCRATCH Studio Jewelry: Narrative, Kinetic, and Unmistakably Handmade

Posted by Wally Smith on

Smith Galleries is proud to welcome a new group of jewelry by Scott & Lisa Cylinder, founders of CHICKENSCRATCH Studio Jewelry. Since 1988, the Cylinders have created work that stands apart in the world of contemporary studio jewelry — blending narrative imagery, kinetic elements, and masterful metalsmithing into pieces that are both playful and sophisticated.

Working from their Maine studio, The Wedge, the Cylinders hand‑cut and manipulate brass, copper, nickel silver, and sterling silver, joining each piece with silver solder for strength and durability. Their signature patination process produces rich, earthy colors and classical verdigris greens, often accented with silver leaf, gold leaf, colored leafs, mica powders, and semi‑transparent enamel paints.

What truly defines CHICKENSCRATCH jewelry is its imagery and movement. Many pieces include swinging legs, wagging tails, flicking tongues, and other movable elements that invite interaction. The imagery draws from fables, wordplay, and everyday observations, creating jewelry that tells a story — one that unfolds as the wearer engages with the piece.

This new arrival at Smith Galleries showcases the Cylinders’ creativity, craftsmanship, and unmistakable artistic voice. It is a small but powerful collection that highlights the charm, humor, and narrative depth of their work.
