Kelly Davidson writes,
"Lampworking is an ancient Italian glass-working technique where one
winds glass rods or pieces around a steel mandrel over a flame to build
layers of color. It gives me the beautiful color and texture I have
craved. I started with a primitive torch similar to what plumbers use,
and a few glass rods in every color I could find. I would spend the next
several years fully immersed in teaching myself how to work with glass.
Through many cuts, burns, trials and errors, I've developed a knowledge
of glass which serves as a tool to release my busy mind of ideas, and
nourish my creative spirit. I usually have an overabundance of ideas
dancing in my head. Many of my ideas stem from upbringing, where I would
spend time alternating between my families' homes in Beaufort and Hilton
Head Island. I'm sure my love of sculpting glass flowers, and anything
dainty and refined, was cultivated by the many hours spent with my
Grandmother, and helping in her garden. By contrast, life on Hilton Head
with my father was always guaranteed to be fun, colorful, bohemian like
adventure, filled with days of beach exploration and jaunts to eclectic
places. I believe my style stems from my adventures in childhood, and
hopefully will continue to grow, and evolve with each new adventure life
brings." |
